Is the failure of social acceptance of HIV-infected fueling its growth?

# Despite open discussion about HIV/AIDS and campaigns, HIV-related stigma and discrimination is still present. Discrimination that includes mandatory HIV testing for new employees has also been a major hindrance in prevention and treatment efforts.
# A new survey of people in the seven Western industrialized nations shows a high percentage know little or nothing about HIV/AIDS.
# One-quarter of the citizens of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States think the problem is “greatly exaggerated”.
# Despite all the resources being put in by the international agencies the epidemic is growing and for millions of people the disease HIV is not real.

For sure. This can not be overlooked as an aspect in this fight. As well as hurting those affected, such attitudes are a major hindrance in prevention and treatment effort.

HIV is like a sin that cannot be tolerated. In the past, people with HIV were told that contacting HIV was their fault. But this time with efforts that help people be aware of safe sex and promiscuity prevention, HIV patients and non-HIV individuals should be responsible for their actions.

It is better to exaggerate the findings to make people more cautious of HIV’s consequences and lessons (if these were true) than to underreport the situation until it becomes worse.

The reality that people don’t like to be sick is the same as keeping oneself from those infected. Education is a key for people to help HIV patients continue their lives normally, instead of drawinig away from the patients.

Social acceptance is the least priority as of the moment. What is more significant is to let the world know how to prevent HIV transmission.

Obviously it is, I mean social acceptance is main problem here. Its not only about the social acceptance of HIV infected but also about the fact that many people are against the idea of sex education.

The last thing we want to see is teenage kids being shy talking about HIV in public and getting involve in the act. Unless the masses aren’t aware of the simple facts about HIV(or any STD , for that matter) we can’t see any changes in number of HIV cases.

Also , as stated here, Social acceptance of HIV infected is also a major issue, Patients are treated like sinners and stops many from coming into light.

People are even scared to reveal such secrets to their life-partners which in turn jeopardise the health of their partners too.

It’s like catch 22 , we are in deadlock situation here, social acceptance will come with education (sex education here) and education wont happen till society allows(accepts) it

i think it’s upto govt. to take harsh steps regarding awareness schemes. they must make it mandatory for all schools , no matter what parents think about it.

People in Western industrial world may not be aware how widespread HIV problem is.....but still due to education and hi literacy in this part of the world keeps them enough aware about having safe sex at their personal level.

Things are different in India, though. People here sometimes have NO ACCESS to condoms! There might be even lakhs of men and women in India who haven’t seen or used condoms even ONCE in their lives.

Moreover, sex is a taboo in our culture which makes it very shameful even to query about sexually transmitted diseases from a reliable source.

All we can do is to CHANGE the culture of considering sex as taboo if we want to eliminate AIDS!

First of all we need to examine how this disease is spreading? It is not spreading because society as a large is not ready to accept HIV-infected, but because people still don’t give importance to safe sex or think this kind of disease is only for lower strata of society or somebody evil.

We still haven’t come out of the notion of ancient ages that life-threatening diseases like HIV are only for sinners.

Society do need to develop tolerance towards HIV positives. The psychological torture through which one HIV+ has to go through may sometimes lead to spreading of disease, but never upto the extent of fueling.

It is also worth questioning that why still government has all over the world has failed so miserably in providing subsidised medicines for HIV.

We really need to tell the world that HIV+ can survive like a normal person if he has access to proper medication.

Yes, to a certain extent. But will social acceptance really make it to grow at a slower rate? No, I don’t think so. Safe sexual practices, better idea about how the disease spreads will really help.
